New York State Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages

The April edition of the NYS OBEWL newsletter has been released. This newsletter is posted on their website along with an archive of previous issues.

U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP)

The OSEP Fast Facts on students with disabilities who are English learners served under Part B of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act highlights 1.6% of students enrolled in public elementary and secondary schools are dually identified as students with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B and an English learner.

The OSEP Fast Facts also notes the number of students with disabilities who are English learners in the U.S. grew by almost 30% between the 2012 and 2020 school years, according to OSEP’s blog.

OSEP Fast Facts is an ongoing effort to display data from the 12 data collections authorized under IDEA Section 618 into graphic, visual representations with the intent to present 618 data quickly and clearly.

Standards-based Lesson Planning for the DL and Spanish Language Arts Classroom
April 21, 2022, 3:30-5:30 PM via Zoom

This session focuses on a standards-based lesson planning using the workshop model that addresses the diverse needs of multilingual learners in the DL classroom Spanish Language Arts curriculum (Reading, Writing). Participants will gain a better understanding of the Spanish language and its idiosyncrasies, and the importance of incorporating direct Spanish language instruction into the curriculum. This session will be conducted in Spanish.

Fostering Biliteracy & Bilingualism through Writing in Math
April 28, 2022, 4:00-5:30 PM via Zoom

Ever wonder how you can increase multilingual learners’ engagement with writing across the curriculum? This workshop will focus on strategies bilingual educators can implement in TBE/DL classrooms to engage students in writing activities in Math lessons.

History is fun! Like a big “bochinche,” or gossip, Social Studies topics spark multilingual students’ interest and keep them engaged in learning. This workshop focuses on strategies that capitalize on student interest to improve writing skills through merging writing with social studies in the TBE/DL classroom.

Harnessing Students’ Home Language in All Classrooms to Build Linguistic Skills
June 2, 2022, 4:00-5:30 PM and June 11, 2022, 10:30-12:00 PM via Zoom

How do I include my students’ home languages in the classroom if I don’t speak the language? Ensuring that all students are able to engage in the curriculum is not only good practice but is also an integral part of supporting culturally responsive pedagogy. Intended for all teachers of English Language Learners/Multilingual Learners, this two-part workshop will focus on strategies and tools to help educators harness their multilingual learners’ full linguistic repertoire across content areas.
