Pre-Referral Considerations for ELLs - at Dutchess BOCES

  • Dutchess BOCES, Salt Point Turnpike Campus 5 BOCES Road Pougkeepsie, NY 12601 United States (map)

Educators must identify the factors affecting their learning when an English Language Learner (ELL) struggles academically. Behaviors that may resemble signs of a disability need careful examination to rule out factors unrelated to the student's inherent abilities. Distinguishing between stages of language acquisition, cultural and linguistic diversity, learning gaps, and disabilities is complex and challenging. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to examine and address external or systemic influences before making a referral.

Key topics: Participants will delve into critical considerations for a student at risk of referral to special education and make equitable and informed decisions. The session will cover legal requirements, characteristics of second language acquisition, clinical markers of disabilities, cultural dynamics, social-emotional resilience, optimal learning environments, effective interventions, and comprehensive assessment practices.

Participants should bring a device to access workshop materials.

Fee: Free
